The Art of Gift-Giving

17 Sep 2025

gift-giving philippines

Ever since the beginning of time, gifts have played a major role in building friendships and even societies.

Did you know that to establish good will, Ferdinand Magellan gave a red velvet chair, hat, small cross, cloth, mirror and other trinkets to Rajah Humabon? (as chronicled by Antonio Pigafetta)

What gift you give matters a lot as well!

In China, a clock is never given because the word for “clock” in Mandarin is “钟” (zhōng) which rhymes with a word associated with death.

In Japan, one does not give anything sharp as a gift because this symbolically means you want to "cut" the relationship.

It warms our hearts when we unexpectedly see a papemelroti product appear out of nowhere.

One such time was when Tina (the "TI" of papemelroti) took a 3-day trip to Tawi-Tawi, the furthest group of islands, south of the Philippines.  She took an airplane and several boats (of various sizes) to get there.  She was on a medical mission with some friends.

One day, they visited their host's workplace.  Just then, something caught Tina's eye.  Lo and behold, on a desk was a World's Greatest Father Photoframe made by papemelroti!  Tina was flabbergasted!

The father proudly displayed it where he could see it every single day.

Another story goes that a man went to Papemelroti to buy a "World's Greatest Father" to gift his dad on Father's day.  When he gave it, his mom felt sad because she wanted a "World's Greatest Mother" to match!  So he had to go back and buy one for his mom!

Stories like this really warm our hearts.  It shows how deeply a gift can express love!

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” — Winston Churchill

It is said that for someone to feel cared for, you need to know their "Love Language".  This means that even if you keep showing love the way you know how, this does not mean they will feel loved.

The 5 Love Languages is a book by Dr. Gary Chapman and its preface is that everybody is different.

He said that if we want to let people know how valuable they are to us, we should know what their Love Language is.

  1. Words of Affirmation – spoken or written expressions of love, encouragement, appreciation.
  2. Acts of Service – doing helpful things (big or small) to show you care.
  3. Quality Time – giving someone your full, undivided attention.
  4. Physical Touch – hugs, holding hands, closeness, physical affection.
  5. Receiving Gifts – thoughtful presents that symbolize love.

Receiving a gift, specially an unexpected one can be a powerful and long-lasting memory.  Whatever you give speaks of your heart and desire for the good of the other.

In today's fast-paced world, gifts have not been as integral in relationships as before.  In fact, it is said that the digital space has loomed so large that it has replaced a lot of real life friendships.

Everyone seems to be in a rush.  Receiving a handwritten letter these days is rare.  It would be good to think about slowing down and rediscovering what is most important to us.  Better yet, reconnecting with our family, friends and widening our circle.

When we design and craft gifts in papemelroti, it is our hope that the receiver will be delighted and that these gifts would foster harmony and affection between people.
