Celebrating Advent Well 2025
As a child, the coming of Christmas was always so magical. It was filled to lights, sweets and gifts! Everything seemed wonderful! As we got older, the mystery and the wonder seems to fade but new meaning can come if we know what the TRUE MEANING of Advent really is.
The word ADVENT comes from the Latin word adventus meaning "arrival, coming, approach". For us Christians, we know that Advent signals that Christmas is drawing near. Many of us Filipinos think that Christmas time is here once the "BER" months arrive (SeptemBER, OctoBER...)
Christmas actually comes only on December 25th! In the olden days, Christmas decorations were only put up once Christmas came.
So if we are now in the season of Advent, what "coming" are we awaiting?
We prepare by reflecting on the 3 Comings of Christ:
1. The first coming of Christ as a babe in a manger - God made man, born of a virgin
2. The second coming of Christ in glory at the end of time - as King and Judge of all.
3. The coming of the Lord into our hearts today and every day through His Holy Spirit and through the Sacraments.
Advent is not exactly a time of celebration but more of a time for penitence. When we cleanse our hearts of all sin and evil, we prepare a place for our Lord Jesus Christ who saved us from eternal death.
As we begin this season, let us say a prayer and allow God to make this Advent the most blessed ever!
Dear Lord Jesus,
Glory and praise to You our beloved Lord.
Thank You for coming to us as a humble baby in poverty and simplicity so that all may feel welcome to come to You.
We offer up this special season of grace. We want to live it with hope, peace, joy and love.
Make our hearts your manger dear Lord, keep far from us all sin and evil.
Grant us the grace to see Your light and journey closer and closer to You this Advent.
We love You Lord, help us to love You more.
In the name of the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.
Amen.
