ASPIN Mahalin ❤️ the Filipino Dog

30 Jul 2025

aspin day august 18

August 18 is the Philippine National ASPIN Day!

What are ASPINs?  They are the Asong PINoys that we are celebrating!

No, we don't want to call them "askals" (or street dogs) anymore.  We have learned to appreciate them more and more through the years.

There are certain traits that Aspins have that make them a cut about the rest.  They are known to be loving and friendly.

They are not fussy and so long as you take good care of them, they will return your affection in priceless ways!  Adopted Aspins are especially expressive in their gratitude to their owners.

They won't break the bank because they give back a lot to their owners.  They are known to be good companions and guardians of the family.  They also shed less fur so they are easy to care for.

Aspins are smart and trainable!  Kimchi was trained by her owner Chardy Ang to catch the frisbee.  She soon became known as the "Champion Dog" for winning the competition.

More on Kimchi's story

They are strong, resilient, brave and loyal.   The Philippine military have chosen Aspins over other kinds of dogs to serve the country because of their unbeatable qualities.

Many know about "Hachiko", the well-loved dog of Japan whose statue is proudly displayed beside Tokyo's busiest intersection.

Did you know that the Philippines has its very own "Hachiko" whose statue tell the story of a brave Aspin who saved two young children from being run over by a motorcycle.

The children were crossing the road and were about to be hit when Kabang leaped at the motorcycle rider making it veer away from harming the children.

Despite Kabang getting severly disfigured from the incident, she survived and even gave birth after that event.  She has long since passed away but her great act of courage is memorialized in Zamboanga City.

Let's celebrate Aspins on August 18 and always!  They are indeed man's best friends!

Many thanks to PAWS (Philippine Animal Welfare Society) for establishing National Aspin day and for taking care of aspins in the country.

Look how cute all the Aspins (and Puspins) are!
