2005 Earth Day E-newsletter
15 Apr 2005
Dear Friend,
Have you ever danced in the rain? Climbed a tree? Walked barefoot on the grass? Felt bliss as a gentle breeze cooled your weary brow? Or have been overjoyed by smelling a bouquet of flowers? Have you ever visited the underwater world and marvelled at its enthralling mystery? Or scaled the mountain peaks, seeing the clouds from above?
These are only some of the simple joys of the naturalist ( which I identify with). Nature has truly given us so much, even if we hardly notice it. We city folk tend to forget that our basic necessities such as water, food supply, energy, shelter are sourced from our forests and seas. We have always needed nature's gifts. Now it is nature that needs us. Let's heed it's call for help by calling each other on to protect and nurture it.
"All things bright and beautiful, all things great and small,
All things wise and wonderful, the Lord God made them all."

Drink Up or Speak Up
An important message from WWF and Philippine Daily Inquirer - Our continued reliance on imported fossil fuels like coal and oil for energy is one of the largest reasons behind problems like global warming, air pollution, the rise in respiratory ailments, and the worsening condition of our water supplies. This dependence also leaves us economically vulnerable to the spiralling cost of coal and oil in the world market. And things will only get murkier unless we reduce our use of coal and oil and push for the increased use of renewable energy sources like geothermal , wind, biomass, hydro and solar. Speak up and let the government know you want clean energy. Text WWF YES to 2366 for Globe (P2.50/text) or log on to www.powerswitch.org.ph/vote . Act now and help get the Renewable Energy Bill passed into law. Maybe then, the future won't be such a hard thing to swallow.
Earth Month at the Parks and Wildlife (Ninoy Aquino Parks)!
The Ninoy Aquino Wildlife Park (Quezon Avenue, Q.C.), together with MyZoo Foundation, will be presenting and hosting several events throughout the whole month of April 2005. Various activities such as on-the-spot drawing contests, a classical music concert, storytelling, encounters with animals, and a writing contest will be held every Saturday of April at the amphitheater area to promote environmental consciousness and responsibility amongst the foundation's corporate partners and the youth. The Phil. Eagle Foundation will have a booth there every Saturday of April where you can find friendly volunteers, free brochures, and Phil. Eagle merchandise like coloring books, story books, t-shirts, videos and stickers. See you there!
Save the Mantas!
Have you ever seen a Manta Ray? Well, yesterday I saw some Manta Rays' tails being sold at Evangelista St., Quiapo, Manila. The store vendor said it wards off "aswang" (Philippine folklore monster). How sad that this magnificent creature, known to roam our oceans in great numbers, now dwindle, ending up as meat and magic wands! Each animal has its integral part in our ecosystem and we must respect its place there. If you want to help, e-mail robert@mantas.org . For once, let not man be the "aswang" of the sea! (Christina, e-newsletter editor)
